He was born on 7th October 1661 and succeeded his father Guru Hari Rai to become the guru for himself. Guru Harkrishan Das had a unique aspect of his life and it was that he was only 5 years old when he rose to be the Guru for the very first time in his life. Every year, we celebrate this day at the Gurdwara Bangla Sahi as a mark of respect to this eighth Sikh guru. It was said that the guru used to stay at the bungalow of Raja Rai Singh which was located in close vicinity to the Gurdwara Bangla Sahib.
How is Guru Harkrishan Das Jayanti Celebrated?
Guru Harkrishan Jayanti is celebrated with a lot of fervor. It is one of the most religious festivals according to the Sikhs. People generally visit the gurudwara on this day. Special celebrations are done in Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. However, visiting this gurudwara specifically is not mandatory. Hence, people usually go to the ones that are located near their homes. Langar or good is prepared on this occasion and the devotees are served with the prasad. A special kind of ritual called the Kar Seva is performed on the occasion and there is a tint of pomp and glow all around on this day.
Gurdwara Bangla Sahib has a significance in this festival. It is believed that the water of the pool in front of this gurudwara helped the devotees to get rid of smallpox that was prevalent in Delhi at that time. It had been possible only because of the Guru’s blessings and thus, the rituals are still carried forward even today!
